Documentation is critical…
I became a dance history major because early in my school journey, the head of the department told me that in a Western-dominant world, written documentation is key. She explained that the Western world tells, not shows (and if not you, then who?).
(Think about it: Western musics rely on notes and scales. Slews of critics unironically “write” about dance, music and visual art. Not too long ago oral tradition was considered “primitive.” Surprise – many world cultures do not value or judge art this way.)
…or we’ll confuse the aliens.
Today documentation is even more efficient and democratic thanks to the interwebs.
Scholarly journals? Libraries? Word of mouth? None are, or will ever be, as effective anymore at gauging the temperature of the people than the internet. The results of my random and judgmental domain name survey conclude that teaching artists have a lot of catching up to do documenting our work.
Imagine the extraterrestrials analyzing everything we humans are posting right now. If Earth was judged based on the amount web pages produced, then our intergalactic friends believe that porn, celebrity gossip and professional sports are more important than TEACHING ARTISTS.
Travesty.
What can we do?
1. Invest in one of the available domains. Or pick any other name, as long as the googlebots know your site is about teaching artists and arts education.
2. Find hosting – free or paid — and get your site up.
3. Commit to adding one reflection or resource each month. Or, repost someone with permission. Just take continuous action!
That’s truly it. That’s what I’m doing, contributing my nano-part to the giga-verse. Let’s work together. We can be accountability buddies.
Then, we can coalize our resources and operate at least one of those premium domains to make it easier for the aliens to learn about our work.
Are you joining the mission?
Imagine being introduced to some influencer at the next conference you attend and replying:“Why, yes! I am the owner of teachingartisttips.com!”
We can make it a reality!
If you come up with a more exciting domain name, are taking on the challenge, or already have your own site and can teach us some things, please comment or contact me directly.
